If you have an old pair of jeans in the bottom of your dresser, you’re in luck. Target is introducing a new limited-time event that will allow customers to trade in their old dungarees for a discount on new denim.
Target announced its first-ever Denim Take Back event in a press release Monday. From Sunday, August 4, through Saturday, August 10, customers will have an entire week to clean out their closets and recycle their old, well-loved denim (up to five items)—from any brand or retailer—in exchange for a Target Circle promo code for 20% off new denim products.
That means you can get Target’s latest rockstar skinny jeans, flares, slouches, or barrel-legged jeans for your teen (or yourself) at a discount, just in time for back-to-school.
“Our new Denim Take Back Event is an easy way for families to give their used denim a new life,” Gena Fox, Target’s senior vice president of merchandising for apparel and accessories, said in a statement. “With back-to-school and college shopping top of mind for families, we’re offering this . . . deal to make it even more affordable for our guests to refresh their denim wardrobes while also doing our part to reduce waste and keep used denim out of landfills.”
The condition of the items you bring in doesn’t matter—so even your well-worn “holey” jeans count. And Target’s promo code can be used on any brand carried by the retailer, including Universal Thread, Wild Fable, Goodfellow & Co., and Levi’s. But to qualify for the discount, the purchase has to be made by August 10.
It’s not the first time Target has hosted a give-back event. According to the announcement, the brand is building upon the positive reception other give-back events have received, such as its Car Seat Trade-In Program. Not only did that program help families clear out their garages, but it also helped recycle more than 2.6 million car seats, or about “9.7 million pounds of materials since 2016.”
Target is not the first store to offer trade-ins on clothing, either. After a successful pilot program, Lululemon launched its resale program, Lululemon Like New. “Bringing Lululemon Like New to all U.S. guests is a major step toward a circular eco-system and achieving our Impact Agenda goals to reduce our environmental footprint,” Celeste Burgoyne, Lululemon’s president of Americas and global guest innovation, shared in a release. The program scores you gift cards with real dollar amounts, depending on the items you turn in.
American Eagle, Madewell, and Athleta also have similar programs. For example, Madewell gives customers $20 off their new denim in exchange for old jeans.
So whether you’re a full-blown environmentalist or just a savvy shopper wearing skinny jeans or mom jeans, it’s looking like trade-in programs can have you looking like the latest.
